Is colon cleansing safe or are there any hidden dangers to following the different colon detoxification methods?

People often wonder whether colon cleansing is really a safe practice to do. The question is justified since we can’t see what’s inside us and that alone is often scary. Intestinal cleansing is actually an ancient method used to detoxify our large intestine for better health. Over the centuries many techniques have been used for colon care but some methods might not be safe due to their aggressive approach. Safe colon detoxification should be your foremost concern if you look into your colon health.

Common colon cleansing practices used today:

To clean your colon of fecal matter and re-instate a healthy flora within your intestine you can choose to do several methods. The following are commonly used these days:

  • The colon cleansing enema procedure: Colon enemas are self induced colon flushes. Specifically made enema bags can be bought from your drugstore and filled with about a gallon of tepid water (body temperature is best). To do the actual process you have to hang the enema bag up high somewhere in your bath, or shower. Anywhere were you can basically position yourself comfortably to insert the plastic insertion tip into your rectum.By flushing water through your colon it will be cleaned, restoring the healthy balance needed for functioning well. Many medical practitioners don’t approve of a colon cleansing enema practice. Their arguments range from being unsafe,  addictive and uncomfortable. It is also worth mentioning here that this practice only cleanses the lower part of the colon.
  • Colonic procedure: A colonic procedure also uses the process of water. A colonic consists of multiple infusions of water throughout the procedure and is administered by a trained colon hydro-therapist. Opposed to doing an enema, during this process fecal matter is actually being flushed out via an inserted tube.At the end of the procedure the client will have to visit the toilet to pass residual stool and water. This type of colon cleansing is also called colon hydrotherapy.
  • The third method of colon detoxification is to do a natural detox at home. This involves a specific, fiber-rich diet and plenty of water while cutting out all processed foods and refined sugars.

Each of the three methods outlined above are safe to use – although the enema is the least favored by most people – given you are being supervised by a qualified practitioner. Since colon care becomes easier the more often you do it, it can become quite addictive. You will soon start to appreciate the feeling of well-being that envelopes you after a colon cleansing session and crave it each time you feel constipated, or just not “quite right”.
