Parasites are more common than one might think. They can populate the gastro-intestinal tract in humans and animals. If you have pets at home and follow a particular type of diet, there is a good chance you may suffer from intestinal parasites.

Depending on what type of parasite you have, they can live in various parts of the body.  There are four major types of parasites, but over 1,000 different kinds all together.  Parasites can be found in unwashed food, contaminated water or by skin contact.  Some people develop a parasite infestation from coming into contact with contaminated soil.  Once the organisms are swallowed, the parasites move into the intestines.  Parasites are often found in sandboxes and on school playgrounds.

In some individuals, symptoms may come and go.  Some people suffer from some or many of the above symptoms, but that does not mean that they are necessarily infected with intestinal parasites.  Sometimes parasites will cause the patient to have symptoms which may lead the doctors to believe that the patient is suffering from an unrelated disease or illness and treatment options will be incorrectly diagnosed.  In children who are found to have intestinal parasites, parents often report irritability and restlessness.

There are many different ways to treat intestinal parasites.

You can buy a parasite or colon cleanser from your local health food store, make some dietary changes or even try and over-the-counter de-wormer, like would be used for your dogs or cats.  A good method of measurement is to use 1 mg per 5 pounds of body weight.  This should be completed twice a year.  Speak to your doctor regarding the safeness of using such a product in order to make sure that you can safely and effectively use this form of treatment.

Eating a diet full of garlic, onion and snacking on pumpkin seeds can be very helpful.  Those interested in attempting a colon cleanser should speak to a health food store representative or a certified nutritionist in order to make sure the product they are using is a good product to use.  Not all products will work the way they are supposed to.  Beware of ordering products online and make sure you are purchasing products from a reputable seller.
