Colon is an important organ that aids with food processing and elimination of waste. Colon cancer is when cancer cells develop in the colon tissues. It is possible to lower your risk of colon cancer with changes in your diet and the use of supplements.

Colon cancer is a disease in which malignant or cancer cells form in the tissues of the colon. The colon is part of the digestive system. It removes and processes nutrients from foods and then helps to pass the waste material out of your body.

Colon cancer is a disease that may be caused by many factors. These are genetic, dietary, and environmental factors. It is unlikely that any one factor, such as fiber, plays a dominant role.

Woman with Variety of Fruits and Vegetables

So what can help reduce your risk of colon cancer?

Oral supplements such as calcium, fish oil and folic acid, diets high in fiber, fruits and vegetables and low in saturated fat and red meat, avoiding obesity, getting regular exercise, and quitting cigarette smoking are safe measures that are likely to prevent or at least reduce your risk of colo-rectal cancer.

As you are aware, high fiber diets are the best thing for colon problems. A woman should eat 21 to 25 grams of fiber a day and a man 30 to38 grams a day. The best foods for a high fiber diet include fruits, vegetables, and grains. In making the right combination of foods, you can very easily sustain a high fiber diet.

Studies have shown that people with high fiber diets have more frequent and bulky stools and had less illness. It is thought that the health benefits from fiber relate to its ability to increase stool bulk and speed up how quickly stool moves through the colon. A recent National Institutes of Health study concluded that fiber from grains and whole grain foods helped reduce the risk of intestinal cancer and lower gastrointestinal cancers. This can also help with overall colon health.

Here are some supplements that have been proven to help with lowering your cancer risks:

People using glucosamine had 27% lower risk of colorectal cancer.

People using chondroitin had 35% lower risk of colorectal cancer.

People using fish oil had 35% lower risk of colorectal cancer.

People using MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) had 54% lower risk of colorectal cancer.

People using the herb St. John’s wort had 65% lower risk of colorectal cancer.

These are all supplements that are available over the counter or in your local health food store. All supplements have various benefits so it may be necessary to do your research on what else each of these supplements can do, besides reduce your cancer risk.

Vitamin D is a supplement that may help with digestion and may reduce cancer risks. Your body produces acid to digest food; however, in high amounts this digestive acid can be cancerous. Studies have shown that Vitamin D can help your body alleviate some of this acid before it can lead to colon cancer. Vitamin D also helps protect against other types of cancer, helps your heart, strengthens your bones by helping your body use calcium, and boosts your immune system function.

These methods are not guaranteed to eliminate colon cancer. However, they can reduce your risk of colon cancer and they can help keep your colon healthy.

Candida is essentially a yeast infection in your colon (or other parts of your body). If you have an overload of Candida, it is important to get rid of it. To do this, you can perform a colon cleanse.

The colon is involved with the digestion of foods and the elimination of waste. Unfortunately, the colon can become overgrown with yeast or Candida. If this occurs, you can have an increase in intestinal problems.

Fruit Smoothies

The best way to remove yeast is to start with a colon cleansing.

There are many ways to cleanse your colon from diet to hydrotherapy. One of the quickest ways to remove toxins from your colon is by use of a colonic or enema. Both of these treatments involve flushing water into your rectum and through your colon. These are used to remove all excess waste that may be clogged within the colon. Both are very effective and have been thought to even lead to overall better health.

So after you have cleansed your colon from excess toxins and waste, you should change your diet to colon cleansing foods. First, you should start with a diet full of organic vegetables and fruits. You can also use this opportunity to rid your diet of processed foods, fast foods and other unhealthy foods. You can also try a juice cleanse, in which you drink all organic fruit drinks. These drinks can be something you make at home.

As you continue with your colon cleansing diet, you can add a natural fiber supplement Psyllium. Psyllium is a natural fiber that can help the digestive system work more effectively. The recommended method for usage is to add one or two tablespoons to a glass of water and drink it with a meal, one to two times a day. This will move the waste matter out of your system.

Once you cleanse your colon and remove the excess waste and the Candida, you need to prevent it from returning. To prevent the return of Candida, you should change your diet. Reduce sugars, which lead to unnecessary break-outs of yeast. Avoid yeast-filled foods, such as breads, rolls, muffins and bagels. And avoid alcohol, which also contains yeast.

Shower or bathe every day to keep body yeasts at a minimum. You should dry and clean your genital area carefully. Candidas thrive in warm and moist environments. Therefore, if you exercise or perform strenuous work, you should re-shower and dry off again. Additionally, you should always wear a condom to prevent unnecessary exposures to yeast infections.

Finally one of the best ways to avoid yeast is to avoid taking antibiotics. Antibiotics are used to destroy the bacteria in your system; however, in turn they destroy the healthy bacteria. Without sufficient good bacteria, the Candida can easily multiply and overwhelm your system.

If you take precautions, you can manage to keep the yeast at a normal level within your body. The regular yeast is not a problem until it is overgrown. Therefore, prevention is the best method.

The best way to detox your colon and your body is with a change in diet. There are other ways, but they can be evasive procedures. A short term detox diet can involves fruits and vegetables.

Segmented Pink Grapefruit

As your colon is constantly working to eliminate excess waste, a colon cleansing may be necessary to keep the colon working to full efficiency. The first step in your detox is a trip to the grocery store. You will need the following:

Filtered water – This can be bottled water or tap water that is filtered

High fiber fruits – Organic are best and obviously fruits that you like. Some suggestions: Grapefruit, oranges, berries, and apples

Vegetables – again organic is best, as is vegetables that you can eat raw or cooked. Some suggestions: broccoli, cabbage, lettuces of all kinds, squashes, zucchini or any other favorites.

Psyllium Supplements – Psyllium can be found at most health food stores, pharmacies, and natural health stores. Psyllium contains soluble fiber, which increases stool bulk, and whisks matter from the colon. It should be taken with plenty of water, as a tablet or as a powder mixed with water.

As with all diets, you should consult your physician to make sure it is safe and appropriate for you.

This diet should only be used for one to three days. Once the diet is over, you can return to your regular diet gradually incorporating meat, grain and dairy products. It is recommended that you only have one meal per day when returning to normal to not create a digestive problem. However, it is hopeful that in following this diet even for this short period of time, you may adapt some of these healthier habits and keep your colon healthy in the long term.

The following is the diet, along with some sample menus:

For Breakfast:

Fresh fruits, eaten with skin or in their whole state, for example:

Grapefruit, sliced and sectioned (no sugar added)

Orange

Apple

If you wish, you may instead make a juice blend from these fruits.

Psyllium tablet or powder, taken with a large 8 oz glass of water

For Lunch:

Large salad of raw vegetables

With olive oil and vinegar or plain vinegar as dressing.

Lemon juice may also be used as desired.

NO salad dressings.

Sample: Large salad with romaine, red and green lettuce, cucumbers, spinach, celery, sprouts; topped with balsamic vinegar

For Dinner:

Steamed, cooked vegetables.

Do not microwave vegetables.

Eat as much as desired.

Dress only with lemon juice or vinegar.

Sample: Steamed broccoli, cauliflower, carrots

As for beverages, drink at least one quart of filtered water, including water with added psyllium.

At the end of the three days, you will hopefully feel better and energized. After this three-day detox, you can continue your detox with foods that are high in fiber. In eating these foods alone, you can have a natural detox on a regular basis.

For individuals suffering from constipation, recurring diarrhea, bladder and kidney infections, recurrent yeast infections, bad breath, stomach cramping, body odor and other seemingly common symptoms, you may consider modifying your diet for a healthier colon.

Many experts believe that disease beings in the colon. The colon is the third most common site for cancer and it is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in Canada today.

Flax Seeds in Small Bowl

Your colon is your large intestine and it is your own personal waste management system for your body. It is here that toxins can either healthily be removed or a clogged and unhealthy colon will allow the toxins to buildup. You can easily modify your diet to create a healthier environment for your colon. By eating the correct foods, you will be eliminating debris from your colon naturally. If you are recurrently suffering from bacterial and fungal infections, your colon may be to blame!

Fiber

Fiber is extremely important when it comes to your colon. Fiber can naturally be found in green leafy vegetables, fruits, beans, seeds, nuts and whole grain foods. By eating a high-fiber diet, you’ll be supporting a healthier digestive system. The fiber gets rid of negative debris from your colon as if it was being swept out by a broom. Both soluble and insoluble fiber is important to your diet. Soluble fiber increases valuable bacteria, producing natural antibiotics to eliminate harmful bacteria, such as Salmonella and E-Coli.

At the top of the list for a health colon-friendly diet are flax seeds and oats. They are high in both soluble and insoluble fiber. Just one tablespoon of flax seeds contains four to six grams of fiber! Other good foods in this category include beans, peas, rice, barley, citrus, strawberry and apples. You can get a good amount of insoluble fiber by eating whole wheat, rye, brown rice, barley, cabbage, beets, carrots, brussels sprouts, turnips, cauliflower and apples (with the skin).

Think Green!

Green foods are an excellent source of health for your colon! Alfalfa, wheatgrass, barley grass, spirulina and blue-grass algae are excellent choices. These are all ideal foods for cleansing the colon naturally. In addition to cleansing, these types of foods can also soothe and heal damaged tissue in the digestive tract, helping the body to obtain oxygen while drawing out toxins.

Water

Water is your next best friend when it comes to cleansing your colon naturally. Water is very important to keeping our bodies lubricated and working properly. Did you know that the human body is made up of 80 % water? That’s a lot of water! We need water to keep our vital organs working properly, but also to keep our joints lubricated and to make sure everything is functioning properly. You should be drinking plenty of water throughout the day and it should be your beverage of choice before anything else.

Those suffering from an insufficient amount of water tend to be constipated and have high toxicity levels in their bowels. Drink anywhere from six to ten glasses of healthy water a day.

Conclusion

Eat a diet high in healthy fiber and drink plenty of water. By eating lots of green leafy vegetables and eating healthy fruit, you’ll be doing a good job keeping your colon clean of debris and toxins.
